Although not yet the “Guardians of the Galaxy,” the heroes of these story lines would eventually form the modern team and revolutionize everything “space” in Marvel Comics. Then came along the amazing Annihilation story line, created by Keith Giffen and Andy Schmidt, followed by Annihilation: Conquest, created by Dan Abnet and Andy Lanning. Where is there room for nuance when an individual can completely rewrite the universe at a whim? Annihilation (Marvel Comics) However, it gets boring after a while when every story is the based around the same cosmic threat. It was not a subtle time in comic books, and everything led up to an all-powerful nihilist who sought to destroy the world because he fancied the embodiment of death. Until the ten years ago, Thanos related content revolved around the Infinity Stones and related story lines that all seemed to include “Infinity” in the title. However, those at Marvel behind the Cinematic Universe know that you can’t tell a story with Thanos, the “big bad,” without touching on all of that “space” stuff. While a fundamental part of the Marvel comic books over the last three decades, those who would form the modern “Guardians” were almost dismissed entirely by Hollywood execs and movie goers alike. Abnett’s and Lanning’s Guardians of the Galaxy (Marvel Comics) Of these, there are many important characters who stand out: Bug, Heather Douglas (Moondragon), Phyla-Vell, Wendell Vaughn (Quasar), Richard Rider (Nova). With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 now in theaters, it seems more certain that a majority of the characters historically connected to the galactic team of misfits may never make it onto the big screen as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
